the ancient name of the city is reported to have been Anthia but it was soon renamed Apollonia. At different times the city was known as Apollonia Pontica (i.e. Apollonia of the Black Sea - ancient Black Sea) or as Apollonia Magna. During Byzantine rule it was renamed as Sozopol. During the Ottoman Empire the city was called Sizebolou.
